Visual Timeline Proposal Idea

As many of you know and have seen I love photography, and I am always taking photos. Whether it is with a DSLR or more frequently now with my just using my phone. I figures since writing in my journal on a daily basis are a written record for what has been going on this quarter, and during my time here at Antioch University. I thought I would sift through my phone and create a mosaic of all the photos I have taken over the last few months, maybe even years.

As it is my last quarter I thought this could serve as not only as an excellent memoir piece but also a visual diary for everyone to see. I think that this will be more meaningful to me, and more of a reminder of my time here during this class and my past two years here at this school. A journal to me is really enjoyable but we as people are more visual than anything. I wanted to create something that I will enjoy as well as have up for other to enjoy as well. I think it will be a fun representation of myself and of my college career. Something I can look back on and see the fun experiences I had and the time frames of different years as well. My idea behind it though is to create something that even a stranger will enjoy and be able to stand in front of and look at for a while.

I plan on printing these all out in a timely manner that is as cost effective as possible and then mounting them all to a piece of foam board from Kinko’s so that I can have some rigidity. Then I think once all the photo tiles are all on the board I will writing in a permanent pen some of the dates near the photos that were most important to me and why. I possibly may even frame it we will all have to wait and see. The hard part is going to be selecting the photos from my phone and seeing which ones are better suited for this piece.

Most importantly however I think I want to do this because the idea came to me about a year ago and due to work and school never got the chance to fill that void. So I am very happy to say that I will be able to finally make this idea a reality by some miracle or another and I hope that every one will be able to enjoy it as much as I will. Plus if everything goes to plan and it turns out nice I can share with friends and family how I put it together.

  3. Dig this idea. It's all going to be in the execution, though. Pro-tip: go to Art Essentials on Victoria for your foam core. 1/2 the price plus they have more sizes.

  4. I really like your idea, knowing what I know about you this is definitely something I can see you doing. I would love to see you still do this but push it out of your comfort zone a little. I would love to hear more of your options. You are super creative so I don’t want to see you pull back on this project! Great idea though, can’t wait to see your finished project!

  5. Sounds like such a great idea! yea i like the idea of having a visual diary. I think thats really creative and sounds like fun. So your plan is finding a picture for each journal entry you have done? like one picture that represents that entire entry or what are you thinking?

  6. Salsbury,

I wrote these thoughts to some other folks who had photography-related ideas, so please don’t think I’m cheaping you out on feedback—it’s just relevant to you too.

A photography-related idea is taking a series of photos like you mentioned and then writing a reflection about each one—on both a personal level (what it represents to you) and a professional/logistical one (how you captured the shot, what you thought through as a photographer).

I’m such a digitoid (new word?), but I bet there are some badass programs/websites with solid photography-related platforms for you—this would save you $$$, increase the likelihood of preserving it for, and you’d also likely be able to share it easier with others if you wanted to do so.

Lastly, I asked for 3 proposals, Salsbury, not 1… even if you’re dead-set on this one, I’d like you to think about other possibilities too.

  7. I really like this. I wrote something similar to Natalie, but I really think it would be cool to accompany the photo with another photo, creatively shot, of a journal entry from the time of the photo if that makes sense.

  9. Oops...I didn't do three proposals either...but hey, this sounds like a fun project - and if you can truly relate your journal entries to specific pictures - I say DO IT. A picture says a thousand words - which would be a really decent contribution to personal journal entries. I love being able to associate stories with real-life pictures...so much more meaningful and easier to remember memories this way!
    Have fun with it :)

  10. I really like how you're making your project tangible! I love the idea, but I guess I did forget that it has to be more personal somehow about writing your thoughts/feelings from each moment/photo captured. I'll be really interested to see how it turns out! Good luck Nick! :)

  11. Well this sounds like a fun idea. I feel it is a great way to motivate yourself but making your project something you plan to look back on. I feel it is a great way to put your Ausb life and experiences in the project, because that is all part of your feeling and thoughts. Good luck with it !!! sounds like an exiting project

  12. I like this project idea a lot, especially because it is you last quarter. I think the idea will encapsulate your journey and time here at AUSB. I say GO FOR IT! I think Zack has a point about writing a reflection on the pictures too, but whatever you choose I'm positive it will come out looking SWEEEEET.
